1. Go through your casual tops/blouses first. These items are easily up-datable and probably the most worn looking out of all the items in your closet. That black t-shirt that looks so flattering but is starting to fade and has spent a few too many cycles in the dryer? Time to emotionally disconnect and put in the pj drawer or charity pile.

2. Try on ALL of your pants and jeans. Maybe you have lost a few pounds since last season and those dark wash skinnys are starting to look more like relaxed fit. Dressier pants have a tendency to look slightly dated if not updated every other year. Subtle differences in the cut or bottom detailing can give away a pant thats heydey has expired.

3. Pull out your sweater drawer and look for visible snags and pillage. A timeless cashmere sweater is something that can last years, but a more inexpensive material, especially wool or cotton, can start to fade and look old.

4. Shoes can instantly update a look or give off the impression that you tend to buy quantity over quality. Keep your chocolate leather riding boots from winter as they will still be chic to wear for another season. If your Ugg boots and getting more wear than than your favorite childhood stuffed animal, it is to give them away (to your trash can).

5. Jewelery can easily be forgotten until you have so many silver bangles you could become a belly dancer in your spare time. If you tend to purchase a lot of fashion jewelery, look for obvious fading of the original color or an off putting metallic smell. Keep statement necklaces that are not too loud, as a tendency for a middle ground look will be in for spring, such as a chunky strand of pearls.
